1. BE YOU

I don’t want everyone to dress like me. I don’t want everyone to like the way I dress. I like it when people find their style and allow it to grow and take shape.

Here’s some suggestions I’d give for finding your fashion identity:

Every once and a while, wear somebody else’s clothes. Just like the proverb says, don’t judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. Dressing from someone else’s closet can do much to expand your paradigm as well as inspire that person in pairings from their own wardrobe. Walk someone else’s closet.

Don’t like things just because everyone likes them. When you become the jump-off-a-cliff just because its vogue person, you’re killing your fashion inner man’s soul. Over-conformity is self-inflicted cancer to fashion individuality. Hate on some things please.

Don’t boycott things just because they’re popular. I totally understand hating something if its overplayed to a profane degree, but if you hate just because its popular then you’re letting pop culture reverse psychology you out of something you may really enjoy. To me, this is just as condemnable as liking something just because its popular. Don’t hate on everything please.

Wear things you’re not sure of. Having a sense of humor in your appearance is necessary to growing into your fashion sense. Stretching yourself out of your current comfort level will in the end show you to be a better dresser. Its like trying new foods— you’ll either never like it and stop it or you’ll learn to like it and see it as an option in the future. Wear something stupid.

Find what works for you and keep evolving it. Don’t get stuck trying to pull off the image of your current friend group. Don’t be afraid to stand out a bit. Know your body type. Keep some things consistent, creating a signature feature or two. Treat clothing yourself less like a job and more like a game. Have some fun.

    Be the only you.
